About the Project

Page 4 is an ongoing research project led by Jim Joel, focused on documenting the rich history of old cinemas in East Africa, with a starting point in Kampala, a city that was at the forefront of cinematic culture from the 1950s to the 1980s. During this period, cinemas in Kampala were more than just venues for screening films; they were vibrant cultural hubs that nurtured filmmakers, film professionals, and diverse audiences. These spaces significantly influenced the city’s cultural landscape and left a lasting imprint on its skyline.

This project meticulously archives the films shown at five of Kampala’s most iconic cinemas: Norman, Neeta, Odeon, Delite, and the Drive-In Cinema. Through this effort, we aim to preserve the memories and cultural significance of these establishments, which played a crucial role in the city’s social and cultural life.

At the heart of our work is the concept of a living archive, which recognizes the enduring relevance of cinematic memories and built heritage. By treating these old cinemas as living archives, we will create a digital repository that preserves their intangible heritage, ensuring that the cultural legacy of these spaces remains accessible within the ever-evolving urban environment.
